Offer came in a bit higher than I'm currently making.  Haven't accepted yet, but plan to.  Wanted to talk with the hubby before I actually accepted.

Yes, it's good news. I was willing to take a pay cut to take the job, and I'm thrilled to bits it came in a bit higher than my current salary.

Want to borrow my icon for the day? ;-) ;-)

It's been so long since you applied, Susie, can you remind me just why you were interested in this position over your current one?

Universities can be great places to work, provided you have good people in your department/area. Fun having students around, lots of activities and events, Christmas shutdowns... ;-)

blessings on your family!

Thank you so much, art! I'm thrilled to bits!

The primary reason of interest is my kids can go to this private university for free now, not to mention if I go back to school, all my education is free. That was the prime motivator for me to look at a Uni job to begin with.

As for this job, I currently work in a hospital research lab - I do specialized fungal testing and research projects. The new job is a research position as well, dealing with fungus, but in jet fuel (it's research with the Air Force). While it's a bit different work (patient specimens vs jet fuel), it does have some similarities.

The thing that intrigued me the most about this job (and I didn't find this out until the interview) is it will be ever changing. What we'll be doing now, we won't be doing in a year. And to me, that sounds like fun. I "could" have done some of that here, but being a lone lab tech, I had no one to really help me set up things, bounce ideas off of, etc. So it was hard to get set up. Over there, I'll be the only microbiologist, but I'll be working with a molecular biologist, a physicist, a chemist, a PhD chemist, a environmental engineer, and we'll work on our own projects but be able to help others out, too.

It's a bit scary, and a huge learning curve in a lot of ways - I've never worked in academia before, so that will be new and different, but I know that I have knowledge they want - mainly I have been safety officer here for 10 years and I know all about lab safety. I know how to write databases in Access and how to get info out. I know all about setting up a lab. So I do have certain knowledge they wanted/needed.

I interviewed with EVERYONE I think that I'll be working with, and they were all very, very nice. I'll work the closest with the molecular biologist, and she was really nice.

And since I'll start at the AFB, I'll get Gov't holidays, too. Plus the shutdown at Christmas is something like five days.

Thank you for the blessings!

Free schooling is good. That is a really nice benefit.

I had a friend who was willing to take a paycut to go work at the college we attended -- Calvin ( -- because he'd get 50% discount after 5 years of employment. It didn't work out, but it is a strong attractor. And here you've got free looking you in the face?! I trust it is a good school... Connected with the AFB as well? Hmm.

Y'know, I knew a fellow who moved from Ontario down to Ohio to do work with the military, he was a chemist. (just asked my wife and she thought it was paint, I thought it was military... oh well :-)

best wishes!

I think it's a very good school. It's not directly affiliated with the AFB, but it's a private Catholic institute. I'll email you with the details.
