Disclaimer: I don't own any of Superman or Superman Returns. I just like to play on their playground occasionally.

A/N: Huge, huge thanks to [personal profile] aggiebell90 and [personal profile] bistyboo1974 who are fantabulous betas and worked wonders on this story. They made it so much better with their kind comments and corrections. Any remaining errors are strictly mine, not theirs.

This is not a fandom I routinely write in. I usually haunt the Harry Potter fandom, so please take that into consideration when you read my humble offerings here. Again, thanks to [personal profile] bistyboo1974 for allowing me to take part in this challenge and for setting all this up. You’re the bestest!

ETA: A beautiful banner by the wonderful [personal profile] ancarett. *hugs her*

A pallet of vivid colors splashed across the sky – hues from the deepest purple to the golden shades of orange. The sky seemed to go on forever, meeting the vast ocean stretched out before her, its blue and green waves splashing onto the beach. Lois’ senses had been awakened – her vision came into focus as she took in the picture-perfect view spread out in front of her. The salty smell of the ocean water tingled her nose as she drew a deep, refreshing breath. Her ears heard the quiet lapping sounds of the waves as they crashed on the beach, working their way up the sand and spreading their intricate pattern in the grains. Her skin felt the rough texture of sand against it, and that feeling contrasted with the smooth silkiness of the water washing over her bare toes and feet.

During her customary, every day work grind at the Daily Planet, Lois never considered herself a morning person. Hell, she wasn't even human until her third cup of coffee, second if one of those was an espresso. But there was something about being on vacation, about being on this quiet, secluded beach, watching the sun rise in all its colorful glory that had beckoned her out of bed, even with the man of her dreams sleeping by her side.

She had slipped quietly out of their room this morning. Clarks’ eyes had flown open as soon as he felt her stir, but after kissing him and telling him to stay put, promising she’d be back in a flash, he had drifted off again. Not that Lois would have minded Clark joining her – not at all – however, she was quite content in solitary reflection, musing on where life had taken her.

Never in her wildest dreams did she, Lois Lane, lead reporter for the Daily Planet, ever expect to be there on a beach in Daytona Beach Shores, celebrating her union with a wonderful man; something she never thought she’d do once, let alone twice. Her mind wandered to Richard – a man she still loved, but knew had not been her soul mate. The man who had accepted her and Jason, no questions asked. He had loved them both, had helped her make a home for their little family, had shared her hopes and dreams. In those seven years they were together, they were immensely happy. But even in that happiness, though she’d never have admitted it, there was something missing – a piece of the puzzle of their lives that had gone astray, a piece that had never fit right. She always felt it – it would niggle at her, even – but she always pushed it to the back of her brain. She‘d ignored it as best as she could, and she would go on as always.

When Richard died, the guilt ate at her while she grieved, not only because of his death, but because she always knew something was never quite right with their relationship and she had done nothing to resolve it. She had never spoken to Richard about it, never knew if he felt the same- that something was missing. Lois had felt that she had betrayed Richard by not being completely honest with him, and she had regretted that deeply. She knew she would never be able to go back and make it right and that had been a very painful realization.

It took time, but she had worked through all of it. It hadn’t been simple, but she had done it. Her discovery of who Clark really was had definitely complicated the matter a bit, too. She had realized the missing piece had nothing to do with Richard and everything to do with Superman – the man who had truly always held her heart, the man who had fathered her son, the man who had remained a mystery. Once she realized he and Clark were one in the same, she felt confused, even as the pieces snapped together with a resounding click.

Snapped together. To this day, it amazed her how it all ended up fitting together. Once she got past her anger, her confusion over Clark’s hidden secret, their lives melded together as it was always meant to be. It was frightening, yet exciting; challenging, yet simple all at the same time. Their lives had become one even before any official commitment; it was as if subconsciously they knew that they were soul mates, meant to be. She would never have thought that her initial interview with the “Man of Steel” would have brought her to this point in her life. To be sharing it with Clark, to be raising their son, to be one with one another, was just a wonderful dream. One she was glad to actually be living, not just dreaming.

The reds of the sky caught her eye. Red had always defined their life in so many different ways. Red indicated passion – their passion for each other as well as Clark’s passion to make the world a better place for mankind. These ‘threads’ were woven as tightly in the fabric of their lives as the indestructible strands were woven in the fabric of his red cape. Their relationship would always influence who they were and their lives would never be normal. After all, being married to a hero definitely made life interesting, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Lois never thought of her life as normal to begin with. She thrived on the diversity that the world threw at her. So loving a hero, while challenging, was where she was supposed to be, where she needed to be.

“Lois?” Clark’s voice broke her out of her reverie. She turned and smiled, seeing him standing there – barefoot, dressed in only a pair of blue pajama pants, holding two steaming mugs of coffee. A mix of concern and amusement crossed his face as he asked, “May I join you?” A small smile graced his face, his strong, chiseled features softening as he looked at her.

“Absolutely,” she said, her smile broadening as she patted the sand next to her. “Pull up some beach.”

He handed her a mug and sat, snaking a free arm behind her, taking in the sunrise before him. The sun was almost up, shining brightly as it reflected off the ocean water. “Penny for your thoughts, Lois,” he asked her, pulling her closer and nestling his face into her hair.

“Oh, just thinking about life. Our life,” she answered, scooting a bit closer. “Thinking about how lucky I am, how lucky we are, the memories we’ve made. About our future…” She laid her head onto his shoulder.

“It is a good future, isn’t it?” he asked, smiling.

“Oh, yes, most definitely,” she replied, nodding.

They sat in comfortable silence as they watched the water, enjoying the quiet moments of just being with each other. As they finished their coffee, she slowly stood, grabbing his hand and pulling him to his feet. She tugged, saying, “Come on.” Grinning, she added, “Let’s go make some more memories.”
