Yes a manually-powered push reel did that. My twin brother and I were playing in the front yard while dad was mowing the lawn. (not much danger of getting hit by a flying object from a push reel) My brother went out in the street so dad went to get him. Somehow I might have fallen rotating the reel or something while I was checking out the mower. I don't think anyone really saw what happened. But an 18 month old finger through the nuckle brobably doesn't have the resistance of a stick the size of a pencil.
I remember using the push reel over at granpas house and I am almost certain I didn't have enough oomf to push it at 6. Of course it was probably a 1950's model that weighed 3 or 4 times as much as todays models.
